Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Indigenous metalwork is an integral part of the cultural and economic fabric of Bida Local Government Area, Niger State. Renowned for its brasswork and intricate designs, the Bida metalwork tradition reflects the creativity, skill, and heritage of the local community. However, despite its cultural significance, the visibility of Bida’s metalwork remains limited, both locally and internationally. Photography, as a visual art and documentation tool, has the potential to showcase the beauty and craftsmanship of indigenous metalwork, connecting artisans to broader markets and audiences. According to Yusuf and Adebayo (2024), visual representation through photography can enhance cultural preservation, attract tourism, and promote economic growth. This study explores the role of photography in showcasing indigenous metalwork in Bida, focusing on its impact on cultural preservation and market promotion.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the rich tradition of metalwork in Bida, local artisans face challenges such as limited market access, lack of recognition, and inadequate documentation of their craft. The absence of effective promotional strategies has hindered the growth and sustainability of the metalwork industry. Photography, with its ability to visually capture and communicate the artistry of indigenous metalwork, remains underutilized in this context. This study seeks to address this gap by examining how photography can showcase and promote Bida’s indigenous metalwork.
